Oklahoma City - Outpost Week 1

We packed up and moved on out in our modern day prairie schooner from Stillwater down to the historic Route 66 and on into Oklahoma City via Arcadia.  Along the way we stopped at a couple of roadside attractions.  The Arcadia Red Round Barn and Pops, a tribute to the roadside gas stations of days gone by. We set up our camp on base at Tinker Air Force base Family Camp.  It is nice with full amenities...including a tornado shelter.  Let's hope we don't have to use it.  The first night we were here there were tornadoes just north of the Oklahoma/Kansas State line.  No issues for us here.  Thank God!  We've been  visiting with the many family and friends of Stacey's.  We've also been doing some great school field trips like the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.  We also went down to Bricktown for an evening. Check out Brick town here: Brick Town OKC. Along the way we are eating way too much good food and having a great time!  We will probably be here for another week then it's off to the Great State of Texas!

How could resist stopping here?!

If you're wondering, like I was, about why is this barn round? Well, back in 1889 the builders were apparently under the false impression that the round shape would deflect tornadoes!

Our modern day "stage coach" in over flow parking for one night as we awaited a spot on Tinker Fam Camp.  After going to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum I thought I'd post hints  for "stage coach" travelers:
1. The best seat inside the stage coach is the one next to the driver, you will get more rest with less than half the bumps and jars than any other seat.

2. Don't swear or lop over your neighbor when sleeping.

3. If a team runs away, sit still and take your chances; if you jump, nine times out of ten you will be hurt.

4. Don't smoke inside, especially in the morning, spit on the leeward side of the coach.

5. If you have anything to take in a bottle, pass it around, a man who drinks by himself  is such a case is lost to all human feeling.

6. Never attempt to fire a gun or pistol while on the road; it may frighten the team and the careless handling and cocking of the weapon makes nervous people nervous.

7.  Never discuss politics or religion, nor point out places on the road where horrible murders have been committed, if delicate women are among the passengers.

8. Dont' grease your hair before starting or dust will stick there in sufficient quantities to make a respectable "tater" patch.

9. Don't imagine for a moment you are going on a picnic; expect annoyance, discomfort and some hardships.  If you are disappointed, thank heaven.

Hailey my "ham".

Hailey models the latest cowgirl fashion!

Fun long-horn steer facts:
They can weigh as much as a car.  They can jump fences up to six feet high.  Long horns were the first herds on many western ranches.  A single cattle drive in the 1870's could contain as many as 150,000 long horns.  Today, that is the approximate total number of the long horn herd. Cowboys called motherless calves "dogies", which is derived from the Spanish word "dogal", which means the short rope used to keep a calf away from its mother while she was being milked.

Hailey wants to be Annie Oakley!

Imagine our surprise as we cross paths in OKC with my Aunt & Uncle as they pass through on their way back from Arizona en route to my home state of Ohio!

Team Breitmann attends worship at Life Church in Edmond, OK.  A great preaching was had by all.  I had never heard the biblical character of Samson preached on like that.  Men, I highly recommend that you listen to all four parts of the series.  You can watch and listen to them here.  Life Church
